Daily Helping for December 18th, 2020 – Tina Guo – Crystallize

A photo still of Tina Guo from the music video of Crystallize. She is playing her cello with dancers behind her.

For some reason, I woke up this morning and said, “Cello! I want to listen to a cello!” It was rather odd, given that I’ve never said this before in my life, but one YouTube search later and here we are. Tina Guo doing a beautiful cover of Lindsey Stirling’s “Crystallize“.

I don’t know what I expected when I demanded a cello, but this certainly wasn’t it. This is not a classical cello performance. At least, not in the way I understand classical music. This piece is part cello, part electronic music, with a healthy dose of dubstep thrown in for good measure. And the video features a troupe of backing dancers who progressively get more and more undressed as the piece goes on. A stodgy night at the symphony this is not.

I don’t know if I’m entirely sold on the whole sexy cello motif just yet, but I adore this song. It’s gorgeous, and Tina Guo does a beautiful job of making it her own while honouring Stirling’s original piece. That being said, this is the second time I’ve seen a piece with this skinny cello design. Is this this how they’re all made now? I’m asking for a friend…
