Daily Helping for December 17th, 2020 – Lady Cove Women’s Choir & Eastern Owl – Warrior

A photo still from the video of Warrior by the Lady Cove Women's Choir & Eastern Owl.

This video is simply beautiful. “Warrior” is a collaboration between the Lady Cove Women’s Choir and Eastern Owl, an eight-piece Indigenous-led folk band. The only instrument used is the traditional Mi’kmaq drum. Everything else is just their voices. It’s stunning.

I will admit to feeling a not insignificant amount of yearning while watching this video. It was filmed in the far eastern coast of Canada, as both groups hail from Newfoundland and Labrador. I’m from the far western coast, so the polar opposite side of the country, but I grew up next to the ocean. A different ocean from the one in this video, but an ocean nonetheless. After spending nearly a year confined in a city, I could almost smell the salt water while I watched this. I think a trip to the coast, any coast, is in order at this point. And soon.

I highly recommend watching this video for the visuals alone. But when you’re done, take the time to listen once more with your eyes closed. The ebb and flow of their voices is beautiful, almost hypnotic, and the harmonies are gorgeous. I can only hope that the beauty of music will never cease to take my breath away.
