Daily Helping for August 20th, 2021 – Supa G – That Drum

A close up photo of musician Supa G. He is resting his chin on his closed fist and staring straight into the camera through a pair of sunglasses.

Once again, today’s helping came about because I looked at a map and picked a country at random. In this case, I chose Belize, and a quick Google search later, I landed on this song by Belizean punta musician Supa G. As soon as I heard it, I knew that my Friday night song series was back.

I should also note that when I first read about Supa G, I 100% read punta rock as punk rock. Which is why I was incredibly confused the first time I listened to this song, wondering if punk meant something different in Belize. However, I quickly realized my mistake and it was back to Google, because I had no idea what punta rock actually was. Which is why I now know that punta is an Afro-indigenous style of music and dance originating from the Garifuna people of Belize, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. Punta rock evolved out of this traditional art form in the late 1970s. The more you know…

I hope you enjoy the rhythmic styles and drumming of Supa G. I know I do. Happy Friday all!
