Daily Helping for June 30th, 2021 – Cueca Dance – Huasos

A photo of six musicians and eight dancers onstage, mid-performance, performing the Huasos traditional Chilean folk dance.

I’ll be honest. Today’s daily helping came about because I wanted to watch something from a country I know very little about. So I looked at a map and thought, “Chile. I know basically nothing about Chile.” And then I started Googling. Which is how I landed on this traditional Chilean folk dance called Huasos.

At first, I thought that Huasos was the name of the style of dancing. However, once again, it was Google to my rescue. Turns out, Huasos is actually the name of Chilean countrymen and horsemen, similar to American cowboys. The style of dancing is actually called Cueca, which is considered to be the national dance of Chile. Huasos often appear in Cueca dancing, wherein the traditionally attired men court the women.

I didn’t know what to expect when I Googled “traditional Chilean art”, but I loved what I found. I think I’m going to continue with this random countries on a map selection technique. You never know what you’re going to get.
