Daily Helping for November 16th, 2020 – Sandra Jourdain

A photo of the front facade of the gallery of Sandra Jordain.

Last month I made a resolution to engage with artists if I had the chance. Specifically, if I was in an art gallery and the artist was present, I would muster up the courage to say something to them. That opportunity arrived a little sooner than I expected when I recently visited the art gallery of Sandra Jourdain. Upon realizing that the woman manning the gallery was the artist herself, I decided to say something. I wouldn’t it was a spectacularly technical conversation about the fine details of painting techniques. But it was a lovely conversation in general. This shouldn’t be a shocker, but it would seem artists like to talk about their work.

A short disclaimer before we continue. Our conversation was in French, so some of it may have gotten lost in translation. But as far as I could tell, Jourdain’s work is a combination of traditional brush work and spray painting. There were several pieces that incorporated additional materials other than paint, and they were all wonderfully abstract. I have no idea why, but abstract is my favourite style of painting.

In the end, I left the gallery feeling a bit like mission accomplished. I got to see some incredibly beautiful works of art, and I got to have a conversation with the artist. In French! During which I was able to express my appreciation for her work. All in all it was a good day. I’m just hoping this courage will continue the next time I find myself in a gallery.
