Not going to lie. I clicked on this video solely due to the name of this song. I like Drew Barrymore, what can I say? But once again, YouTube’s algorithm was spot on, because I love this song by SZA. It’s yet another beautiful and wonderfully chill song for these final weeks of summer. I’m beginning to sense a pattern here…
That being said, it’s also a beautifully poignant song. After listening through once to get a feel for it, I listened a second time to really take in the lyrics, and damn. They somehow manage to effortlessly capture the universal experience of not feeling worthy enough for love, while at the same time they feel deeply personal, as if you’re eavesdropping on an intensely private moment. It’s a lot to take in, but it’s worth it. I also need to immediately look into the rest of SZA’s back catalogue, because clearly she has a way with words.
All in all this has been an odd week. The catchy dance song that would normally herald the weekend came mid-week. And the hauntingly beautiful introspective song that makes you think is taking the Friday slot instead. And you know? I kind of like it this way.
Happy Friday all!
