Daily Helping for February 17th, 2021 – Sjaella – Northern Lights

A promotional photo of the six members of Sjaella, mid-jump as they run towards the camera.

Well that didn’t take long. I know I said yesterday that more choral pieces were likely in my future, but I didn’t think I’d crave another one so soon. And yet that’s exactly what happened this morning. And thank goodness for that, because a couple of quick searches later I discovered this stunning piece by German vocal ensemble Sjaella. Let’s just say it was a truly wonderful way to start the day.

It was also a very different experience from yesterday. Where yesterday was soaring and upbeat, this is somber and restrained, but no less beautiful. One of the comments under the video noted that this particular piece requires a huge level of breath control when sung by so few singers. I have no idea if that’s true or not, but I’m more than willing to believe it. Mostly because I actually didn’t watch the video the first time through. I just closed my eyes and let the music wash over me, and I absolutely thought I was listening to more than just six voices. So clearly they are doing extraordinary things to produce the sounds that they are.

One last note. Someone else commented that if this isn’t what heaven sounds like they’ll be so disappointed. I can’t say I disagree with them on that one.
