Daily Helping for January 12th, 2021 – Julie Gautier – AMA

A photo still of dancer Julie Gautier mid-performance underwater.

Wow. Just… wow. I have no idea how YouTube’s algorithm led me to this video, but thank goodness it did. This short film and performance by Julie Gautier is simply breathtaking.

I was a synchronized swimmer when I was a child, and I spent a not insignificant amount of my teenage years training to move gracefully through water. And let’s just say I never came anywhere close to this. I know first-hand how hard it is to negotiate movement in water, which makes this piece all the more stunning. The way the music builds until Gautier uses the weightlessness of water to soar into the air. It’s just beautiful.

From the notes under the video and the dedication at the end, it is clear that this piece was born out of an incredibly painful experience. I’m just so grateful that Julie Gautier has turned that pain into something wondrous. Again, just… wow.
