Daily Helping for June 12th, 2021 – I Met You On LJ

I know, I know. You’re probably wondering why I’ve started yet another podcast. Especially since I haven’t caught up on the last one I started. But here’s the thing. I love going for walks first thing in the morning. I find it’s a great way to prepare myself for what will inevitably be a very busy day. And while I’m out walking, I love listening to podcasts. Which means I listen to an inordinate number of podcasts, because I tend to burn through episodes at a very rapid pace. This also means I’m always on the look out for new podcasts, which brings us to today’s daily helping: I Met You On LJ.

I listen to a lot of different types of podcasts, but my favourites are podcasts where people talk about the things they love. There’s nothing I love more than listening to someone talk about something they love and are passionate about, and I Met You On LJ absolutely falls into this category. Hosts Maggie and V spend each episode talking about the fandoms they have been in throughout the years, as well as the artists and media properties they’ve loved and/or currently love. And it’s amazing. It’s almost like getting a fandom history lesson each episode, and I love it.

I also love how each episode comes with a healthy dose of critical awareness of whatever they’re talking about. Neither host has blinders on when it comes to the things they love, and they are not shy in discussing any problematic elements that may exist. But they also make it clear that it’s okay to love things that aren’t perfect, as long as you acknowledge those problematic element and don’t excuse them. It’s something that pop culture in general could do with a reminder on.

I usually go for an extra long walk on Saturdays, so the next couple of episodes of I Met You On LJ are already queued up and ready to go. It’s going to be a good day.
