Daily Helping for April 27th, 2021 – Zahara – Loliwe

A photo of singer Zahara standing in a park, holding a guitar. There is a lake and trees in the background, and she is wearing a red dress and a turquoise headband.

I am so in love with her voice. Seriously, I could listen to this song all day. There is something so beautifully lilting about it, so happy and soothing. At least, that’s what it sounds like to me. But full disclosure, I have no idea what she is saying. Zahara is a South African musician, and she sings primarily in Xhosa. Unsurprisingly, I don’t speak Xhosa, and Google was remarkably unhelpful in finding a translation of these lyrics, so I have no idea what this song is actually about. But that’s not going to stop me from listening to it over and over again. It’s just so beautiful and calming, and Zahara’s voice is simply gorgeous. “Loliwe” was her debut single, and what an incredible debut that must have been back in 2011. I can’t wait to discover what she’s created in the decade since then.
