The show image for Wasteman. It is a photo of Joe Leather, wearing a high vis jacket and face made up in drag makeup, looking straight into the camera with one hand raised.

Daily Helping for August 16th, 2023 – Wasteman

There was a moment while watching Wasteman that I had a sudden epiphany. Here I was, watching a solo show about a former garbageman and his journey as a drag queen, in what could only be charitably described as a basement, and the show was absolutely terrific. And that’s when I had the thought. I’m so happy that there is room in the world for all kinds of art. Because I’ve seen a lot of theatre and live performance in my life. The number of shows I’ve attended is well into the four figures by now, across a fantastically wide range of performance styles and genres. And while I may not love every show that I see, I love the fact that they all found a place to perform and put their art out into the world.

Luckily for me, Wasteman was one of the shows that I loved. It was funny, heartfelt, and Joe Leather is an incredible performer. The performance I saw was prefaced by an announcement that we weren’t seeing the full version of the show due to cast injury. And the show was still incredible. I can’t wait to see the full version at some point in the future.
