Daily Helping for June 1st, 2021 – Usha Jey

A promotional photo of Usha Jay, sitting on a chair, one leg crossed over the other, looking directly into the camera.

This is another Daily Hart first. Usha Jey came my way through a recommendation, but not a specific number or piece. Just a “check her out, she’s awesome.” So I did check her out, and she is indeed awesome. Her choreography is a blend of Hip Hop and Bharatnatyam, one of the oldest forms of classical Indian dance, and she is known for creating a #HybridBharatnatyam series of videos on YouTube. I’m always fascinated when artists blend together genres and disciplines, especially ones that are diametrically opposite each other in style. Usha Jey manages to make it look both fresh and seamless.

I’ve already made my way through all of her videos on her YouTube channel, and my only complaint is that they are not nearly long enough. I’d love to see more of her work, so I hope there are more videos on the horizon. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy what is available, and continue to marvel at the never-ending well that is other people’s creativity.
