Daily Helping for October 30th, 2020 – The Old Guard

A photo of the cast of The Old Guard looking straight into the camera.

France is officially back in lockdown. I needed a movie to take my mind off of this fact. Enter The Old Guard.

This movie came highly recommended by a friend, but I didn’t know anything about it beyond “Charlize Theron kicks some ass”. Well, I’m happy to report that she does indeed kick some major ass. Including a grown up Dudley Dursely of all people. But the movie does a lot more than that.

I’ll be the first to admit that all I wanted last night was a dumb action movie to distract me from real life. The Old Guard managed to distract me all right, but it was anything but dumb. It was smart and well plotted, the characters all had depth and convincing motivations, and the action scenes were fantastic. It also managed to include a queer couple among its main protagonists in a way that was no big deal within the confines of the plot, but which felt like a big deal within the greater context of Hollywood. So basically, I loved pretty much everything about this movie.

Sometimes art is supposed to make you think. Sometimes it’s only there to entertain. But I love it when art can seamlessly do both. I’m not exactly thrilled to be going back into lockdown. But at the very least, I kicked my confinement off right with The Old Guard. Just another four weeks to go…
