Daily Helping for February 13th, 2021 – Shereen Ladha – Aayat Dance

A photo still of Shereen Ladha and four additional dancers, mid-pose, from the video of Aayat dance.

I’ve watched a lot of Indian dances over the years because I love the infectious energy and bright colours that usually come with these performances. Which was why this piece by Shereen Ladha caught my eye. It’s described as a fusion of classical Indian dance and contemporary choreography, and I just had to see what that entailed. The answer, it would seem, is a subtly beautiful dance that is unlike any other Indian dance piece I’ve ever seen. Every aspect of it just radiates a peaceful calm and serenity. From the costumes to the music to the choreography. Everything is gorgeously understated and almost dreamlike. It’s beautiful.

It’s also the second time this month I’ve featured a dance piece where the music comes from a Bollywood film. I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately, but so far none of them have been from India. I think I may need to rectify this sooner rather than later, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know. In the meantime, I think I may need to watch this piece one more time. It’s been quite the week, and I could use some of the peaceful calm Shereen Ladha has created.
