I often get to the end of the day and I am exhausted from the weight of the misogyny and sexism that I encounter on a daily basis. The energy that it takes just to exist as a woman in this world. And I exist as a white cis woman, which is enough to protect me from so many things that others have to endure, however unjust that may be. Sometimes I cannot comprehend how much more exhausted others must be at the end of their days.
But there is greatness in that exhaustion. A strength that the world cannot imagine. And I take comfort in this in the moments when everything gets to be a little too heavy. Because one day the fight will be over and all that will be left is the power of that strength. Until that day comes, I hope all marginalized communities take Shanelle’s words to heart and “Just shine.”
