Daily Helping for November 2nd, 2020 – Shamir – On the Regular

A photo still of Shamir smiling directly into the camera from the video for On the Regular.

Not only is it Monday, it’s the first Monday of the new lockdown. Yes, I’m going to keep harping about that. During the last lockdown I found I wasn’t feeling very creative. As a result, my writing output was reduced to practically zero. I’m going to lie, I felt those familiar urges to hang up my pen this time around as well, but I’m not even a month into The Daily Hart, and I have no desire to press pause on this project just yet. The whole point of The Daily Hart is to experience art because art makes me happy. And there’s no better time to actively seek out what makes you happy than during another lockdown in this dumpster fire of a year. So with that out of the way, it’s time for today’s daily helping of art: “On the Regular” by Shamir.

Under normal circumstances, I would say that this is the perfect Monday song. Catchy, upbeat, empowering. It’s got everything you need to start the week off right. That being said, there’s something particularly relevant about this song at this particular moment in time. I love the unapologetic assertiveness of it. How confident the lyrics are. They’re basically saying, “Hell yeah I’m awesome, and I don’t care what anyone else says.” I couldn’t agree more, and as such, I can’t wait to discover more of Shamir’s work. In the meantime, as we make our way through the final months of this terrible, no good, very bad year, I have a feeling “On the Regular” will have a permanent place in my playlist. Because everyone needs a reminder that they’re awesome every once in a while. Especially on a Monday. In lockdown. In 2020.
