Daily Helping for July 20th, 2021 – PIQSIQ – Ahiani: Elsewhere

A promotional photo of Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik of the musical duo PIQSIQ. They are standing side by side and staring straight into the camera.

I had no idea what I was in for when I clicked on this video. All I knew was that PIQSIQ, a musical duo composed of sisters Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik, performed Inuit-style throat singing. Beyond that, I had no idea what Inuit-style throat singing actually entailed, but I was eager to find out. Several listens later, I’m now obsessed.

There is something so hauntingly beautiful about this piece, but I have no idea how to put it into words. All I can say is give it a listen. At the very least, it will probably be unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. And if not and you’re already an Inuit-style throat singing connoisseur, please let me know. I have so many questions and I want to know more. In the meantime, I’ll be diving into PIQSIQ’s back catalogue for more of these amazing sounds and pieces.
