There was a poster all over Edinburgh that caught my eye. The headline advertised the act as a “K-pop Boy Band Comedy Show”. Naturally, I checked it out. And I absolutely loved it. That being said, I still have no idea what it was I actually saw. The show was called Kokoon. And it was exactly as advertised, as it consisted of a K-pop band performing both songs and comedy sketches. However, the band itself was also called Kokoon, and here’s where my confusion lies. I can’t for the life of me figure out if the five guys in the show are actually a K-pop band called Kokoon, or if they are actors pretending to be a K-pop band for the purposes of this show.
I should also note that I don’t really care all that much about the answer. Either way, I had a fantastic time at this show. For one thing, it was hilarious, which is impressive because it was clear that English is not the first language of any of the guys onstage. It’s hard enough to make people laugh in your native language, let alone a foreign language. And yet, myself and the whole audience were laughing from start to finish. The guys were also great singers and dancers, and one of them was an incredible beatboxer. Their physical comedy and comic timing were all also spot on.
As I said, I’m still not sure if Kokoon is meant to be a show or a K-pop group. Perhaps it’s both. Regardless, it was a wonderful hour of pure entertainment, and I loved every second of it.
