Daily Helping for June 8th, 2021 – Ki&Ki – Tsugaru Jongara Bushi

A photo of Ki&Ki, sitting on a balcony, holding their shamisens, mid-performance of the traditional song Tsugaru Jongara Bushi.

I promised there would be more shamisen playing in the future. It was only a matter of time really. And today, just like that, this shamisen group came across my dash. Ki&Ki are a duo based in Tokyo, and I am in awe of this video. Seriously, how do they move their fingers that fast? Just… how?

This song is called “Tsugaru Jongara Bushi”, and similar to my last post, this is a classic song of the Tsugaru-shamisen repertoire. In researching Ki&Ki, I read that they are working on bringing their music to more international audiences in the future. I hope that’s still true, because I would love to see this duo live. If a video can make my jaw drop the way this one did, I can only imagine the effect in person.
