I’m back online, which means The Daily Hart is back! And I’m starting things off again with a hilarious TV show that I recently discovered on Netflix: Girls5eva.
I was a teenager during the height of the late 90s/early 2000s boom of boybands and girl groups, and I would be lying if I didn’t say that I loved it. I loved all the groups, both the big names and the one hit wonders. And I’ve often wondered what happened to those in the later category. What must it have been like to have been the biggest stars around for a couple of weeks and then that’s it? Girls5eva is a show that asks exactly that, as it follows the titular one hit wonder girl group who get a second chance at fame 20 years later when their song is sampled by an up and coming rapper.
I must admit that I’m only a couple of episodes in so far. But I loved those episodes and I can’t wait to watch the rest. Girls5eva has all the nostalgic charm of my formative years, and the script is both hilarious and a poignant commentary on the fleetingness of fame. The songs are incredible parodies of cliched pop songs, and as an added bonus, Sara Bareilles is one of the leads and I love her. What more could you want in a show?
