Daily Helping for March 28th, 2023 – Faiz Ahmad Faiz – We Who Were Killed in the Dark Lanes

Today’s daily helping came to me through a rec inspired by my daily hart on Claude McKay. Apparently there are a lot of seminal poets missing from my artistic education, because Faiz Ahmad Faiz is one of Pakistan’s most renowned writers and this is the first I’m hearing of him. But better late than never I suppose.

Faiz Ahmad Faiz wrote many important and acclaimed poems in his lifetime, but the one that was sent to me was “We Who Were Killed in the Dark Lanes“, which was inspired by the letters of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. It’s extraordinary that the story of two Americans would inspire what is now considered to be a classic piece of Urdu literature. But that’s what’s extraordinary about art in general. Artistic influence knows no borders.
