Daily Helping for September 9th, 2023 – Diego Montoya

I love it when one daily helping leads to another. For example, earlier this week, I featured Sasha Velour as a daily helping. And let’s just say that my exploration of Velour’s work didn’t end with that one video. Instead, I went down a veritable rabbit hole of online performances. Which led me to today’s daily helping: fashion designer Diego Montoya.

Diego Montoya is a designer and visual artist who came to prominence when he collaborated with Sasha Velour for the 9th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Since then, he’s designed for several more prominent drag stars, including designing Shangela’s 2019 Oscar’s dress, and he won an Emmy for his work on We’re Here. I should also note that Diego Montoya had a prominent career prior to being featured on Drag Race, working in New York City as a costume designer and installation artist.

If you’re a regular reader of The Daily Hart, you know that I know next to nothing about fashion. But this is something that I’m trying to rectify by seeking out more fashion designers to learn from and feature. This has opened up a whole new world of art for me to discover and appreciate. And in the case of Diego Montoya’s oeuvre, that world is glorious.
