Daily Helping for May 12th, 2021 – DanceOn – Unsteady

A close up photo of dancers Kent Boyd and Will Johnston from the dance video Unsteady.

The more this challenge continues, the more I am in awe at the stories that can be told through the medium of dance. No dialogue, no words. All it takes is movement to craft a heartbreakingly beautiful narrative. Today’s helping is one of these dance pieces, as it depicts a couple at the breaking point of their relationship, contemplating whether or not it is worth it to keep fighting, or simply walk away. The music is “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors, and to say that it’s the perfect soundtrack to this story would be putting it mildly. I lost track of the number of times this video gave me goosebumps, and it’s only three and a half minutes long.

This video was produced at the same time as the Pulse nightclub shooting, and ends with a dedication to the 49 lives that were lost that horrible night. This is another thing that I will forever be in awe of. How tragedy so often inspires incredible works of art. How artists can take their pain, anger, and grief, and mold it into something beautiful. This video is no exception, and it made me smile as well as cry. Love is love is love is love is love is love. One day, I hope we won’t need quite so many reminders.
