Daily Helping for November 6th, 2020 – Charlotte OC and Tiler Peck

Photo still of the video of Tiler Peck dancing to Charlotte OC's Medicine Man.

Similar to tap dancing, the word ballet can have lots of connotations with the past. It conjures up images Swan Lake and lines of dancers in classical tutus. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Classical ballet is classic for a reason. It’s elegant and beautiful, and everyone should see a performance of it at least once in their lifetime. But much like every other art form, ballet is so much more than the classics. For today’s helping, I deliberately searched for contemporary ballet pieces, and landed on this beautiful video. The dancer is Tiler Peck, the song is “Medicine Man” by Charlotte OC, and the combination is stunning.

In fact, this video was so captivating, I watched it several times. It wasn’t until the third time through that it dawned on me that the whole video is done in one take. I think that’s why I found it so ethereal. When you watch dance onstage, your perspective is fixed. Here, the camera moves with Peck, and without any distracting edits, you’re free to just get caught up in the movements and the flow of the choreography. The result is stunningly beautiful.

At the end of the video, Charlotte OC declares that she could watch the performance all day. I couldn’t agree more.
