Daily Helping for November 17th, 2022 – Bros

It has been a good year for queer rom coms. First we had Fire Island, which I absolutely adored. Seriously, I think I’ve watched that film about five times by now. And then we have Bros, written by Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller. Billed as a boy meets bro love story, this film tells the story of two people with serious commitment issues who attempt to forge a relationship together. So basically, the plot of every rom com ever. Just with two men as leads.

I had been looking forward to Bros coming out for months, and thankfully this film did not disappoint. It is laugh out loud hilarious, but also contains a lot of pretty pointed commentary about LGBTQ rights and representation. I must admit that some of the dialogue was a bit too on the nose preachy for me, but I’m also fully aware that this film is meant to educate as well as entertain. I’m already on board with everything it’s trying to say, so I didn’t need to be hit over the head with its messaging. Other people, however, very much need that sledgehammer, so I’m happy the film went all in.

But mostly I’m just happy with the film overall. It had me laughing throughout, and I was genuinely rooting for these two characters to sort out their shit and just be happy together. Because they are adorable and deserve nice things. Thankfully, (spoiler alert for a rom com) they do, and it was grand to watch.
