Daily Helping for January 2nd, 2021 – Morgan Jenkins – Hoop Dance

A photo of dancer Morgan Dancer with a hula hoop illuminated by LED lights framing her head.

I was on a conference call last month when someone mentioned that they had recently taken up hula hooping. For some reason, that thought stuck in my brain, and so this morning, I decided to see what was out there in terms of hula hoop art. Mainly, was that a thing? What exactly did that entail? Thankfully, YouTube had the answers to both of those questions, because if judging by the abundance of videos available, hula hoop art is very much a thing.

For today’s helping, I landed on this video of artist Morgan Jenkins doing an improvised dance to “Love Me Like You Do” by Ellie Goulding. It’s shot in one unedited take, and the hula hoop she’s using is illuminated. It’s a performance that is somehow both simple and complex at the same time, and it’s beautiful to watch. Mesmerizing even, with the way the light of the hoop moves through the air. All I can say is that I hope you like hula hoops, because I see a lot more videos like this coming your way in the near future.
