Daily Helping for April 7th, 2021 – Ke Kai O Kahiki – Kāne Kahiko

A photo of three dancers from Ke Kai O Kahiki, mid-performance onstage, on their knees with their hands raised in the air to the right.

The last time I featured a hula dance performance, it was a video of Wahine Kahiko, meaning female performers. Today, I decided to look for a performance by the men, and came across this video of Ke Kai O Kahiki, the winning group from the 2009 Merrie Monarch festival. Once again, I’m just in awe of the centuries of history and culture that are contained within these performances. The strength and artistry of these men, and the passion that is on display. It is all simply incredible.

I will also say this, and I say this will all due respect to the Hawaii people and their culture. The shimmy to the ground movement that they do at the 2:10 mark just may well be the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.
